A dying man will today become the first in Western Australia to go before a court to claim damages for alleged historic child sexual abuse at the hands of the Christian Brothers. Paul Vincent Bradshaw, now 74, only has weeks to live — and will spend some of that time alleging in court he was the victim of horrific treatment as a young boy living at the Castledare Junior Orphanage and then St Vincents's Orphanage at Clontarf. His historic case — which will be the first to be heard since WA lifted the time restriction on claims for damages against child abuse perpetrators — has been fast-tracked because Mr Bradshaw has just weeks to live.

Bill Fanderlinden (91) sparked a royal commission in 1976 by refusing to prosecute an Aboriginal man in Narrogin in 1976 - and spent the rest of his career suffering the consequences of that decision. Pushing up against powerful police commissioners such as Owen Leitch, Fanderlinden - and others such as a young Robert French who went on to become the chief justice of the High Court - the old cop is now living proof that if you stick to your guns the good guys win. He's just been awarded a national police medal for his work.
